I’ve seen this addressed before and what I always see people write on the subject is “Otherkin are not oppressed” but I actually heavily disagree with this statement. Otherkin in fact are oppressed. According to dictionary.com’s definition of oppressed: 

op·press

verb (used with object)

to burden with cruel or unjust impositions or restraints;subject to a burdensome or harsh exercise of authority orpower: a people oppressed by totalitarianism.

to lie heavily upon (the mind, a person, etc.): Care andsorrow oppressed them.

to weigh down, as sleep or weariness does.

Archaic . to put down; subdue or suppress.

5.

Archaic . to press upon or against; crush.

You see that definitions 1 and 4 of oppression could very easily be applied to a lot of things otherkin experience at the hands of non-kin.

To this, I say otherkin are oppressed. We are bullied (abliet passively but passive bullying is still bullying) into hiding our identities for fear of ridicule or in some cases being disowned by friends or family. When we do make ourselves known a fair amount of non-kin tell us we “need help”, that we’re some how mentally unsound, or just simply role-playing to “make ourselves feel better” as some kind of escapism. I say this is oppression.

I think what people mean to say when they say “otherkin aren’t oppressed” is “otherkin aren’t abused”. This is the more true statement. Otherkin don’t (and if ever it’s rare) suffer physical abuse because most of us limit being open about  our identities to the internet where we can’t be physically harmed.

In summation, I say otherkin are oppressed, we’re just not abused.
