I always feel warm inside when ever I read stuff to do with Brienne. I sound quite silly here, but there is a goodness to her which I welcome in series like this and something dawned on me when I was reading her chapter, as to why she was special to me. It’s all related to Sansa’s songs about Knights in Shining Armour to save the day, and how our pretty baby is getting quite disheartened by this idea of knights and stuff.
Bear with me a bit because I’m probably rambling about things that the fandom knew before I did but I need to let it out and ugh ugh.
Simple speak, I find it incredible that in a world which pines for more noble people and truer knights like the ones in songs and dreams, a world which tells young ones like Sansa that they no longer exist… Well you know, a true knight has been with us the whole time. A pure and noble person who’s only aim is to be honourable and good- fuck, it’s Brienne you know. Brienne of Tarth. I get the feeling GRRM wrote all these fucked up knights who could only get away with such a title because they are dudes, when Brienne has been here the time. But because of the sexism riddled in this world, people won’t see this real Knight because she’s a woman. But I guess he wrote it like that to really show us what makes a Knight.
And in hindsight, I love love looove that he paired Brienne and Jaime the way he did, because they both effectively subvert what it means to be a noble and honourable person or a knight, but only one will be recognised as such (Jaime), while the other will be lampooned (Brienne).
And I think what is also incredible about Brienne, or how she is written is that she’s not written the way a lot of male writers tend to go about with masculine women ( you know, the sexy tomboy thing but are secretly waiting for a man to make them feminine). She is tough. She is big. She’s gloriously masculine and she is a fighter to the core. Not the hypersexual fighter thing you see in games. But a genuine fighter. And personally, I find her to be just as beautiful as all the other women in this series because she subverts so much shit and remains to be so perfect.
Sorry, I am rambling and making no sense, but I love Brienne and I want more women like her in fiction.
